“Advanced
Ultralight”
Is an understatement.
The Calypso is a development of a line of Jabiru aircraft started
in the mid 80's using their design philosophy and construction
methods to meet the requirements of the advanced ultralight
and sport plane criteria.
The earlier Jabiru aircraft were factory built but subsequently
were packaged as kits for those home builders who like to do
it themselves as well as save money.
The performance is exceptional with a low 39 knot stall speed,
very short take off and high climb rate, but with a good cross
country cruise speed of 90 to 100 kts at 12 to 15 litres per
hour fuel burn. This performance is due to the tough, light
weight composite construction of the airframe and the equally
powerful, light weight aero
engines produced by Jabiru.
The aircraft is easy to fly with good stability in all three
axis and straight forward stall characteristics. The comfortable
seats and 42 inch shoulder width provide the final requirements
for a good cross country aircraft.
Visibility is enhanced by the large transparencies incorporated
in the design.
The Calypso is very versatile with the capability of being
fitted with skis and floats and optional 85 litre fuselage
tank or wing tanks for extended range.
In Canada the Calypso is listed in the advanced ultralight
category so it can be flown by all pilot licence holders including
ultralight.
