The J250 is a direct development of the J200, the larger 2
seat aircraft that was the initial airframe development for
the four seat J400. The fuselage is 2 inches wider and deeper
and of course longer to accommodate the rear seats of the four
seater. The 2-seat J250 uses the same fuselage, but the absence
of rear seats creates a cavernous
baggage area.
The J200/J400 were designed as
fast cruising aircraft with a good range for traveling about
our large countries. With the proposed specifications of
the US sport plane category it was determined that the J200
could be readily adapted to the 1320lb gross weight and stall
speed
limitations. A new wing was designed with greater span and
cord to achieve this aim.
Flight testing proved the design, and the J200 and J400 with
the larger wing became the J250 and J450 with an improved
short field
and
climb
performance
and little cruise penalty.
The J series of aircraft retain the same excellent handling
characteristics of the early Jabiru aircraft as well as
the well proven method of construction. Build times are 500
to
600 hours for the first time builders putting them in the
quick build category but are still listed as 51% kits.
The
J250 is registered in the amateur
built classification. In the amateur
registration the gross weight can be increased to 1540lbs/699kg
making it a heavy hauler with a useful load greater than the
empty weight
of the aircraft. With 36.8USgal/140L of fuel in
the wings these aircraft
have a fast cruise range of over six hours.
